Fall Sale!
What’s a grow bag?
Many of the trees at our fall sale are grown in grow bags, which are sturdy, breathable fabric containers that replace the traditional plastic pot or burlap system. Because the fabric lets air reach the roots, the roots stop growing when they hit the edge of the bag and branch out into a dense, fibrous network instead of circling around the container. The result is a healthier root system that’s ready to establish quickly once it’s in the ground. Grow bag trees are also much lighter than traditional balled-and-burlapped trees, so you can carry and plant a large tree by hand without heavy machinery.
Planting your tree
When you’re ready to plant, simply cut or peel the bag away from the root ball. Don’t plant the bag with the tree. Set the tree in a hole about as deep as the root ball and 1.5 times as wide, backfill with native soil, and water well. Fall is an excellent time to plant, as cooler air and warm soil give roots a chance to settle in before winter, so your tree is off to a strong start next spring.
